Mugwort is a common name for several species of aromatic plants in the genus Artemisia. In Europe, mugwort most often refers to the species Artemisia vulgaris, or common mugwort. The botanical name is derived from the Greek goddess Artemis.Mugwort is also known as “dream weed” for its unique ability to stimulate dreams. It is renowned as a smudging herb for its subtle, sweet scent and dream-inducing qualities. It has a long history of use in the Pagan tradition and is still used in modern-day Pagan magical practices as incense and for smudging or spell work.

Magically, it is just as effective at repelling evil spirits as it is with other vampires – specifically – mosquitoes. Mugwort is associated with the moon and lunar deities, so using it for lucid and prophetic dreaming, divination, and strengthening psychic abilities is a no brainer.Mugwort is a very ancient herb for healing magic and divination, known to be protective to women and travellers.

This is an excellent herb to use for feminine energy and issues. A pillow stuffed with mugwort and slept upon will bring peaceful sleep, produces prophetic dreams and aids astral travel. It is a good alternative to sage in smudge sticks for cleansing and clearing.

Mugwort can also be burned with sandalwood or wormwood during scrying rituals. Also, carry it with you for psychic protection. Make an infusion (dried mugwort steeped in boiled water) to wash crystal balls and magic mirrors to aid psychic workings.

Throw Mugwort onto the fire at midsummer to ensure protection for the following year.

Mugwort is also carried to increase lust and fertility.
